About Jonathon Cooper

Jonathon is an entrepreneur who has been developing nascent platforms, for over 30 years. At times, the major portals of the time, About.com – building their first PPC search engines in the 90s to the early digital marketing leaders like Dotomi, now Conversant. Along with half a dozen other startups before crossing over to travel and building the B2B platforms for two major publishers.

 

Why did you decide to focus on travel? (1:37)

“Who doesn’t love to travel? It is exciting content to work with. I spend a lot of time working with major tourism boards – and help them tell their stories in the B2B channel... Once I got a taste for travel and all those stories I spent about 10 years working in the B2B travel trade.”

 

How did you identify that focus or decide to make that shift? (3:10)

“In terms of the trade in B2B, my father was the publisher of CMP Media. So I understood the channel when I was brought back into the travel side, I was really shocked at how the B2B front was behind… Travel was being told really vibrantly to the consumers, but I had noticed the B2B content hadn't changed much.”

 

Share with us one of your best networking stories (7:15)

“It all started almost 12 years ago, I met someone who recruited me to run some businesses for him in the travel trade. We kept in contact traditionally but started leaning into the channels, LinkedIn, and digital networking tools. It wasn’t until I started my software company that I got smart about networking and the leverage effect. After about a year of getting my feet wet, we started creating content, adding value, thought leadership. We started to catch the eye of a few people, which sometimes is all it takes.”

 

How do you stay in front of your network or community? (11:00)

“Ultimately, understanding and accepting that networking is hard and occasionally uncomfortable. By that I mean being consistent, staying truthful, and adding value, as much as you can or wherever you can. I have taken to producing more articles and short videos to add value through leadership to nurture that world. I am not trying to lean so hard into the digital that I forget how to look someone in the eye and spend time with them…”

 

What advice do you have for business professionals looking to grow their networks? (12:30)

“Understand how central networking is to advance your goals. Take it seriously. Not yourself but take the approach seriously. Even if you don’t understand the significance of networking today, you don’t know what 8 years later will look like… ”

 

Digital networking or traditional networking? (15:20)

“It’s dependent on what my goals are and what I am trying to accomplish. There is a ton of value in the deep connections that you can build in a more traditional sense. That high-touch arena. But as an entrepreneur the value of scale on the digital side, and being able to when the time is right, open the world to your schedule.

 

If you could go back 20 years, what would you tell yourself to do more or less of regarding your career? (17:45)

“When I came out of school in the early 90s, a lot of the talk and pressure what were you going to do with your life?... But if I were to share one thing, it’s more than okay to understand that you may do a bunch of different things. So bringing it back to the network, you never know how someone might bring you into doing other things.”

 

What book are you reading right now? (22:00)

“One was a re-read, Jab Jab Right Hook by Gary Vaynerchuk. It was a good refresher then the other book that I’m just getting into, is Mind Shift by Dr. Barbara Oakley. It’s about how you can overcome stereotypes and preconceived ideas, essentially not feeling so stuck.”

 

Any final words of advice for our listeners? (23:47)

“I approach growing my network 100% from the approach of adding value. If I can add value, then I am off to a good start and it’s work. Putting in the time and being consistent.”
