Amy Westrup has over 20 years of marketing & public relations experience in the professional services industry. She has concentrated her career on advising the legal industry, closely held businesses, individuals, organizations and foundations on focused and strategic marketing, public relations and business development. Ms. Westrup currently serves as the Executive Director of the Association of Corporate Counsel – Wisconsin. Amy has been a professional player with ComedySportz Milwaukee for three years.

 

What is the application of ComedySportz in the corporate setting? (7:00)

“I have done a ton of corporate training, networking, communication between men and women, just different types of sessions throughout my career. And when I started taking formal improve and then became a professional player at ComedySportz. They had already had some corporate training in place and they’ve been doing it…”

 

Share with us one of your best networking stories (13:00)

“When I started the workshops at ComedySportz, I had mentioned it to a friend of mine, who is actually the dean at a school in town. And she just kind of through social networking and stuff had followed my trajectory of what I was trying to do…”

 

How do you stay in front of your network or community? (23:10)

“The social media platforms are extremely helpful… however, again it depends on the end game because I like to close a deal or solidify a deal in person…”

 

What advice do you have for business professionals looking to grow their networks? (24:45)

“I would say, be bold and get out of your comfort zone… But here’s the thing, I moved to Wisconsin 20 years ago. I knew no one in Wisconsin, my husband and I moved here, he got a job at a law firm in town… And I was given the opportunity to reinvent myself…”

 

Digital networking or traditional networking? (29:00)

“kind of depends on what that end game is, if I’m trying to get butts in seats for a legal conference or something, digital is the way to go…”

 

If you could go back 20 years, what would you tell yourself to do more or less of regarding your career? (35:00)

“When I was 20 I was still in college, so I would say, sleepless, study more… Just go with your gut, because I think it is very easy to get pigeonholed. And be like well I’m a communications major, I have to take these classes and nope you can’t you can’t venture out of your box.”

 

What book are you reading right now? (43:00)

“I’m reading the weirdest book right now its called, The Feather Thief. It's about the biggest heist of the British natural history museum. It is the weirdest coolest book…”

 

Any final words of advice for our listeners? (44:40)
